Without hope there is nothing, without opportunity there is no chance. But with faith, a seed of hope grows, opportunity comes and finally a chance blossoms. Beth Shepherd

Bags of Colour aims to help lift women out of poverty by offering them a way forward. We currently work with a few women in Sri Lanka, helping them to create a better life for themselves and their families, however we are planning to extend to other countries. 10% from sales of our bags goes directly back to the women to support them in other income generating ventures or studies.

We source our fabric from various handloom workshops. Each reel of fabric produced varies in patter and colour, and can never be made again.

The fabric is then given out to the women who then make the bags in their home on foot powered machines.

The women then sell the bags to us for a price that is decent and fair and gives them options in their lives. The women take pride in their work and treat it as their own business, helping to empower them and build self worth.

Bags of Colour was founded by myself, Beth Shepherd in 2008, after travelling the country and becoming inspired by the stunning vibrant colours of the country and motivated to create a business which offered a way forward for women who are struggling to make a living for themselves and their families, and to offer a unique and unusual product to consumers so they may have a connection with where their product has come from. I set up the business with a Sri Lankan family in Colombo, we began by finding a group of women who were living with their families in bad conditions between the train tracks and the beach, which had been affected by the tsunami. Since our business has recently grown I am returning to the country to extend the opportunity to women in other communities in the country. We are now extending the bags to other countries.
